Boating at Sumidero Canyon San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico |
San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico
Sumidero Canyon
Got up early to catch my 9AM tour to Sumidero Canyon. Took around couple of hours to get there. We then took a boat to go through the river that snakes through the canyon.
At first, there was nothing overly exciting. As we moved further along the river, the walls started to get higher until we were like tiny ants against the towering canyons!
It was majestic.
Along the way we saw a couple of crocodiles, some spider monkeys, vultures and different types of birds.
Of course, the price we had to pay is roast under the merciless midday sun.
Chorzo
On the way back, we had a 1-hour stop in this town. Nothing really special for me, anyway. More church, but nothing extraordinary.
I couldn’t find a decent lunch, I ended up having semi-sour mangoes with chilli and lime. My stomach’s tough so far.
Guadalupe
Back in SCDLC (San Cristobal de las Casas), met up with fellow CS’r I met at Oaxaca. Walked around town, at least had company to go up the Guadalupe which I hesitated to go alone to yesterday as I didn’t feel safe — not many people especially nearing sunset.
The view reminded me so much of my own hometown in Philippines, La Trinidad Benguet. Very similar landscape, vegetation and climate. Further, the indigenous Mexicans look similar to the Igorots.
Revolucion and Political Campaign
Caught up with other independent travellers for drinks at Revolucion Bar while listening to Latin music, coming from Veracruz (coastal town in Mexico, north of central). Lorenzo from Belgium, Gilbert from France and Sarah from Melbourne.
I excused myself by 11:30PM as I had to get up early tomorrow for another tour. Along the way, heard fireworks and bands. It was part of the political campaign at the Zocalo. The place is swamped! It feels like New Year’s Eve! The place is so alive!
