Semuc Champey: Rockpools, Caving and Tubing
Semuc Champey: Rockpools, Caving and Tubing Semuc Champey, Guatemala |
- Thought the shuttle had forgotten me — then I found out the driver couldn’t find me! Left around 8:30 AM and arrived at Semuc around 5PM. Had to change from the shuttle to a pick-up truck in Lanquin.
- Had my final goodbye to Lindsey (housemate – she’s heading off to Rio Dulce) and Silvia – Reyna de la casa 🙂
- Felt sad, and held back my tears until I got into the shuttle — then I just let them flow. Met so many nice people, made good friends and wished I could stay longer, but I had to move on.
- Met Hina in the shuttle, also staying at the same hostel where I’m headed: El Portal.
- Road to Semuc was unpaved all the way through and we were caught by heavy rain. Rained till late, I hope the weather’s better tomorrow.
Day 2 July 2: Climbing, Swimming, Caving and Tubing A beautiful day today! Had pancakes and eggs for breakfast, including coffee: only Q28. Roomate left, so I now had the whole loft to myself with the window-view bed, overlooking the jungle, misty mountains, the whole of El Portal and the river that runs next to it. Adventure tour by El Portal guide went from 10AM to 5PM.
- El Mirador – Mearly fainted hiking up the very steep climb up to the el Mirador — but the lookout view of the whole cascades of pools of Semuc Champey was worth all the sweat and dehydration!
- Cascade pools – totaly soaked in sweat I couldn’t wait to jump in! The water was refreshing! We slid through the slippery rocks, went into an underground tunnel and dove into the water coming out of a waterfall, soaked into the clear aquamarine pools.
- Went back to El Portal for lunch. The Spanish Torte was just as good as the ones I had in Spain, awesome!
- Caving – Just across the river from El Portal is the entrance to the cave. Our guide was crazy! We went in with only candles to light our way through. The water’s cold and we had to swim through deep parts. There’s a waterfall inside the cave where you could climb up with a rope. Then at the end, there was a very deep pool where some of the others jumped off a rock ledge few meters high.
- Tubing – the most relaxing part, took the tubes from El Portal and just flowed through the river that runs next to it. On the way back, some jumped off the bridge into the river — thought that was crazy: 7meters, and 10 meters from a higher part of the bridge.
