Malta- Getting There and Around the Islands
Malta is an archipelago with five main islands. I am visiting three of them this week: Gozo, Comino and Malta. In Malta, I would be staying for a night in a 300-year old house in the quaint quiet village of Hal Kirkop. The Blue Grotto and the ancient temples are only 5-10 mins ride away. The next four nights I would be spending at Sliema. It would be more convenient for tour pick-ups and public transport. My choice of AirBnB was a perfect location: it was a pleasant surprise for me that it’s only a couple minutes away from the Il-Ghadir baths.
Getting There and Getting Around
It was a last minute decision for me to go to Malta after I already booked a flight from USA to Amsterdam. I found out that there were cheap flights to the archipelago and just went.
It was a great idea to buy the 7-day unlimited Tallinja card first thing when I got to the airport.
Buses were not exactly easy to get around with on the more remote areas of Malta. They only come by the hour, killing what is very much precious limited time on a short holiday. I was lucky to have some free rides. My host in Hal Kirkop picked me up from the airport, so that was easy. I also had cabby give me free ride to and from the blue grotto and Haqar Qim… in the end I paid 10 Euros to get myself back to Hal Kirkop.
At the eastern towns of Valetta, Sliema, St. Julian, buses were more frequent, coming in every 5-10 minutes. Going back to the airport was easy as well, with the express X2 and the direct TD2 – included in the unlimited Tallinja card. It was worth it!
