Last Day in Merida Merida, Mexico |
Merida, Mexico
Breakfast at Hotel Zocalo. This is what I’ve been waiting for: proved to be the best breakfast I’ve ever had staying in a hostel! There were cooks who makes omelettes and crepes at your request. There was a variety of fresh fruits: banana, papaya, pineapple, mangoes… There’s great quality bread, could be toasted upon request. Freeflow of good coffee.
Then met a couple, Filipina and a Polish. Great conversation with great breakfast: couldn’t ask for more!
Zocalo – Markets. Every Sunday they close down the streets around the zocalo. There were market and food stalls and performances. I watched for a while. I bought myself a Mexican hat to shield my face from the heat.
Paseo Montejo. I finally went for a wald down the Paseo Montejo. I took the Itzimna public bus near the center. Stopped at Mueseo Antropologico. I didn’t go in, just had a look outside. Then walked all the way to the end to see the Mayan monument. From there, I had no choice but have lunch at McDonald’s. Restaurants nearby were closed.
Bus to Veracruz. I tool te 5:45PM bus. Just when I was about to leave it poured. Ominous that it poured right when I arrived and when I was leaving. i had the very unpleasant experience of being harassed by Federal Police. I simply asked where the bus is for Veracruz, and the Police asked me for my passport. I was wondering why, then he asked for my visa document. They were both stamped “90 July 2012”. The police made an issue of it. I said, with my minimal Spanish, that it’s not my fault. He and the other lady officer, insisted it was my fault, that I should have checked. As if there’s anything I could do about it. I was getting paranoid, looking at the clock, my bus was about to leave. I kept saying I have to go, asking for my passport back. They both refuses, the lady kept holding on to my passport, until the very last minute, literally at 5:44PM! They finally let me go when a guy asked where I was going, and I said I need to get to the bus, it’s leaving!
