Spanish School – Antigua Plaza
I wasn’t expecting the very basic, informal setting of the class. A table at the courtyard and a couple of chairs for me and my maestra. There’s free flow of good coffee with galletas (or cookies) served during the break. The session was pretty light. It was mainly conversational. Class starts at 8am and finishes at 12pm. I realised I made the right decision to limit the daily sessions to 4 hrs, beyond that I would be too mentally saturated to effectively absorb more information.
Host Family
I met my host family this afternoon, after the class.
My host family brought me along to a birthday celebration of a relative. We rode a tuktuk where every bit of my body (!) shook because of the uneven, cobble-stoned roads. We were served sandwiches followed by birthday cake.
The “fiesta” (or party) culminated with a penyata – which is a paper mache (or something like that) hung on a string, filled with candies inside, and people attempt to break open the paper mache to get the candies.I was asked to give it a go as well. I hit so hard that the stick broke into half, yet the penyata remained intact!
I am planning to stay for a month in Antigua. So far, everything seems fine. I will be staying with a local Antiguan family: a couple with three kids. The kids are polite and nice.
For $90 a week, I will have my own room with private bathroom and three meals a day from Monday to Saturday. The place also includes free wi-fi, although it is very slow.
I am alone so far, but the school Director said another student should be joining me tomorrow.
