Sunrise and Sunset at Monterrico
Sunrise and Sunset at Monterrico Monterrico, Guatemala |
The shuttle picked up the three of us, Joan, Wendy and myself at our homestay around 8AM. We reached Monterico around 11:30AM. We were dropped off right at my accommodation, Hotel Delfin. It’s a real chilled out place. The room is basic and neat. The corridor from my room leads directly towards the ocean, fronted up by a bar with hammocks and comfy cushions. The music matches the place. It’s French, didn’t know the song nor the singer but it sounded cool. I enjoyed a glass of fresh melon with the music and the sound of strong waves pounding on the black sand. The breeze is a welcome respite from the humid heat. It’s definite break from Antigua! I finally had nice fresh seafood for lunch. Wendy and Joan left for their homestay for the week.
Chilled out further, reading my book on the swing, next to the hammocks. Dozing off, decided to just take a nap back in my room. Woke up in time for sunset. Finally! After a month of traveling in Mexico and guatemala, I finally got to see a beautiful, fiery sunset!
Day 2: Monterrico Sunrise Once again… Finally! I was greeted by an amazing sunrise this morning. Nothing spectacular in itself, but experiencing sunrise at the wetlands of Monterico, boating in the tranquil mangroves with the silence punctuated only by the sound of birds, and passing through a vista of the volcanoes perfectly reflected on the water – it’s a blessed experience! The tour started at 5AM, so I had to be up by around 4:30AM. I barely had a couple hours sleep because of noisy couple next to my room. The tour costs Q100 per person but I said to the agent: Porque compro para tres personas, Q75 cada persona? Rough Spanish but said in a savvy way with a warm smile got the deal. Over brekkie, Joan, Wendy and I had light but savory conversations about their lives back in Netherlands. We were interrupted by startling firecrackers and witnessed a prosession for Corpus Cristi. The whole place just reminds me of my grandparents’ hometown in Isabela. Rustic, small town. Saw piggies crossing the street, and chooks running around. Mangoes are abundant waiting to be picked from the gigantic trees. I really enjoyed Monterico, I’m glad I made the last minute decision to come. Sadly, I had to leave and part from Joan and Wendy. My shuttle picked me up at 4PM, and got back to
Antigua just before 7PM.
