Taking it Slow at Merida Merida, Mexico |
Merida, Mexico
There’s not much I could do with the heat except hide from it! LOL
My host hasn’t come back from the party last night. Unfortunately, I had to leave. It hasn’t been very comfortable not having that much interaction with a host. Also, I ahven’t been properly ‘integrated’ with the rest of the family. None of them, except for another one I haven’t met, was home either. I felt like a thief having to leave without saying proper goodbyes face to face.
Knowing my host is still asleep I just had to send him a text message. He replied back later in the afternoon.
Hostel Zocalo. Checked in at Hostel Zocalo arounf 11:30AM. It was the only hostel I saw right smack in the center of town. It’s a colonial building with a lot of character, it’s breezy inside and the buffet breakfast made the deal for me.
Taking a respite from the heat, I just surfed the net and chatted with a friend online for 2-3 hours. The hostel owner saw me and served me some snackie tortilla. Helped myself to their nice coffee as well. That was sweet!
Walkabout. I decided to go out around 4PM. It was still scorching. It took me around 20 minutes walk to the bus station. I booked my trip to Veracruz, which cost M$997. At first, I wanted to go to Campeche, but I decided to skip it — too much logistics to worry about, moving from town to town.
On the way I passed by an Oaxacan gelateria. I had the Beso de Angel (indeed!) and Tequila gelatos, they were just heavenly!
Changed money, running out of cash: M$16.50 to 1Euro. Unfortunately, there’s no place to change Australian dollars.
Night Markets and Free Folkloric Performances. Following the tourist info recommendation, around 8PM, I walked all the way to Paseo Montejo Remate. It was worth going there. I haven’t had anything to eat the whole day except banana and gelato. My stomach was getting sensitive, which is a shame because I could have eaten more! There were a lot of food stalls, and I found one that served only vegetarian pasta. A stall next to it had sinful looking cakes that were grinning at me! I couldn’t help myself — I had leche flan after a dinner of vegetarian pasta.
Just when I’ve given up on meeting familiar faces, I bumped once again into Stefan! Had a chat for a while. We may see each other again in Mexico DF. I’m just delighted every time I meet fellow travellers again.
