Veracruz: Last Day with Hosts Veracruz, Mexico |
Veracruz, Mexico
I honestly didn’t know what else to do today. The tours that interested me are only available on the weekends. It’s a shame, but I’m not really fussed. The heat in Veracruz doesn’t really make it appealing for me to be walking around.
Errands with Angeles. Running out of cash, I changed my last remaining Euros. I had better rates in Merida (M$16.50 to 1 Euro) than here in Veracruz ($15.45). Unfortunately, there’s no place to change my Australian dollars.
Angeles accompanied me, and I joined her in running her errands as well for the rest of the morning. At the same time, she gave me a mini-tour of town. She’s very energetic, had I not known she’s retired with a 30-yr old son, I would have guessed she’s in her late 40’s. She’s in her late 50s with not a wrinkle on her face! She said everyday, she wakes up at 6AM, begins with a prayer facing the sea, walks then jogs along the boulevard (coast) for 7km. She’s been doing it for the last 20 yrs!
Shopping. We went to Mega, which is the massive Mexican supermarket chain, kinda like Walmart or Costco in the USA or Big W in Australia.Loved the donut and tuna empanada (I guess I was just hungry)! Bought more provisions for my trip; unexpectedly Angeles paid for everything and refused to accept my payment!
After enjoying lunch prepared by Angeles, I just napped and wrote rest of the afternoon. It’s too hot to go anywhere!
Veracruz Festiver. We all went out this evening, back to the zocalo for more live bands and dancing. Angeles has really got the groove going! She can really move, amazing for her age! What an inspiration!
I found people in Veracruz to be more polite and gracious. I noticed they say “con permiso”, greet strangers, more often than I have seen on other parts of Mexico.
Seems like they have a good life here. For older folks to still be dancing, having fun at the zocalo, way past their retirement — says a lot!
